This is a plugin for GIMP version 2.x. It allows you to load and save images in DirectDraw Surface (DDS) format.
Source code and binaries for GIMP for windows can be downloaded from the home page.
Home page: http://code.google.com/p/gimp-dds/
the DDS doesn't want to work with my Gimp. I have version 2.6, and I've extracted the files in the right spot, but I keep getting "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b). Click OK to close the application"
Can anyone help me out? I'd love to know how to fix this.
this plugin is compiled in x32.
it will not work with x64 gimp.
this is the error you get when trying to run the 32 bit plugin with 64 bit gimp. you could install the 32 bit version of gimp if you really need this plugin.
I'm running GIMP 2.6.8 with OS X Snow Leopard on a late 2006 Macbook and this plugin works for me. All I did was follow the homepage link, download the zip file, unzip the 'dds.exe' in it and then drop that into my GIMP plugin folder, no hassle. At the time I think it was version 2.0.7 I used, not the more recent 2.0.9, but I don't see why the process should be any different. I can open .dds files, edit them and save them with no apparent problems.
I need a version of the GIMP DDS plugin for my iMac running Mac OS X 'Snow Leopard' 10.6.3, with GIMP 2.6 in X11. I do not have the time to deal with compiling, I have no programming experience, and the learning curve to try to do it myself is not something I am at all interested in. Does anyone have a precompiled version of this plugin that I can download, then simply drag in to my GIMP plugins folder and be done with it?
I get the feeling I'm not the only one having trouble with the installation. Is there a way to get a FAQ attached to the plugin? The readme file isn't helping. Thanks.
I emailed skirst asking if he would include the dds documentation and FAQ along with the plug-in. However, if you want to read the documentation on it now, it can be found at his website:
i dont now much about gimp, i just need this plugin. i searched so long for that but did not find. could somebody please tell me what i have to do after download it.
Hi guys, would someone mind explaining to me how I install this plugin, explain as though you would to a child please. I'm afraid I'm totally unfamiliar with PKG config etc
Most time when i want to save a dds file i get the error:"
Cannot compress images whose dimensions are not multiples of 4.
Saved image will not be compressed.
But i have to get it compressed because otherwise, i cant get the image working for my game.
It needs Alpha compression and Mipmaps.

ok...why is this happening?!?!
In previous editions of GIMP and its DDS plugins I could open the DDS files I wanted, but with this version (GIMP 2.6.6 with the DDS plugin 2.0.7 in Win32 binaries) I can't (at least not all DDS files). I can't even preview the material. Despite being installed correctly in the plug-ins folder. Somebody knows how to get it working?
Found out the solution myself. I have my own PC set up divided into one administrator account and one guest account for Internet security reasons. The former is password-protected, so when I work in the latter, which I normally do, any potential hacker out there who succeeds in breaking through my firewall must also break my password to get to my system files etc. Now, for this DDS plugin failure, I had a reason to work inside the administrator account, and the aforementioned problem persists there. But I discovered, to my surprise, that it works differently inside the guest account. Don't know why, but in this environment I have no trouble opening up all DDS files in GIMP(!). So I just need to transfer this kind of work to my guest account. I'm happy again.
Has anyone figured this one out yet? I have read the entire PDF file, the readme file, and searched online for the last hour and a half . . . I managed to save the image, but got the above error message.
Working on a skin for rFactor car, it flattened the entire image . . . all layers. The "save options" do not work . . .
I get to "Save as DDS". The image I'm working on doesn't use compression, so I leave it set at "None" and choose "RGB8" for Format, but the "Save" selection stays greyed out, so I'm unable to save as a "Volume Map".
Gimp 2.6.8, plugin version 2.0.9, Windows XP SP3, AMD Quad core with 4 GB DDR3.
I downloaded the plugin (dds.exe) and placed it in the "C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins" folder. What did I miss?
well it OPENS DDS files just fine I just blew 2 hours work altering some textures, saved and the reloaded to find that the dds is SAVED was EMPTY.
I SHOULD have been smart and saved a targa backup but that'll have to wait untill another day.
I'm running windows XP, gimp 2.6.4
I threw it into the plugins directory which works for OPENING dds now but the SAVING...The saving is buggered.
awsome job stabbing at dds though! keep up the good work!
How doesn't work ?
Does not show up in the menu?
Show up in the menu but does not show the interface if called?
crash when used ?
Does not give the correct result?
I have Vista 64 and the lastest version of GIMP. The DDS Plugin I put in the plugin folder then restart GIMP as instructed. When trying to then open a DDS file I get Opening 'C:\Users\Julie\Pictures\S3_00B2D882_00000000_95EF726EC3DC9429_paintingModern_o_0x32076593e00135a6%%+_IMG.dds' failed:
Unknown file type
If I look with the Plugin Browser it doesn't show the DDS Plugin as listed.
The plugin installer display that can't find the libgimp-2.0-0.dll. So it can't be installed. If someone could upload the plugin files instead of the installer would be very appreciated.
I haven't saw the readme file where it says that i have to move the plugin to the plugins path. My mistake was that i assume that the exe file was the installer instead of the plugin itself xD.
.. as in doesn't show up in the menu.
It does work with the GIMP in Ubuntu 9.04 i386 - wonderful! - but not with the x64 version. Presumably it's not being acknowledged as being a plug-in because it's not compiled as a 64 bit program like the rest?
Can someone compile it to link with the 64 bit libraries?
Mememememimimime I Have found that GIMP and Paint.Net has errors in their compression algocodes..
Somehow the colors and dephs are bugging once you save them as DDS file :(
This one gives me the best work basis, i think thats the same plug soqzunnie was using in his early m03.mix beta server..
I tried to save the files as lowest 128 color jpeg and after that into dds dxt1 compression, but the gimp fails big time.
Can't play the skins i made back then in 2003, even while the patch stationed no changes. There are bugs in 100% and crashes at 85% of any loaded import dds.
I guess i will have to use Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 already installed on my OS!?
(------- Command Execution Failed -----------
Command Name: Format_DDS
Error Text: Plugin caused an access violation
) (n) freeware bugs me less but i am using the psp photox2 for compressing into the right dds packs.

if the 64 bit not working or getting error message.
-you can always install it from x86 folder and drop this dds exe.
